The City of Sydney
Sydney is the capital of New South Wales with a population of almost 5 million. It is the largest and oldest city in Australia and beautifully situated on Sydney Harbor. The Sydney area was home to the Aboriginal people for thousands of years until the British arrived in 1788 to establish a convict settlement. After a difficult beginning, Sydney developed into a major industrial, business and trading center. Today it is an exciting, cosmopolitan city that offers more entertainment, shopping and sightseeing than any other place in Australia. Its population of 4 million people lives in suburbs spreading out to 55 km from the city center. The harbor, one of the largest and most spectacular in the world, is famous for the Harbor Bridge and the Opera House; it is also a very busy waterway crossed by ships, ferries, fast catamarans and sailing boats.
