Program Description:

Located in Istanbul, the Bogaziçi University campus overlooks the scenic Bosphorus Strait and is just minutes away from the shores of the Black Sea. Since its founding in the 19th century, Bogazici University has enjoyed an excellent reputation as one of the top institutions of higher education in the region. Initially founded in 1863 as Robert College, it was incorporated into the Turkish educational system in 1972 and formally established as Bogaziçi University (BU). As one of Turkey's most competitive state universities, Bogaziçi University offers a wide array of programs, but is particularly strong in engineering, education, social sciences, natural sciences and the arts. Courses at Bogaziçi are taught in English, though Turkish language study is available. Students register for courses upon arrival at Bogaziçi. BU offers a variety of student clubs and organizations that visiting students may choose to join.

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and fifth largest city proper in the world with a population of 12.6 million. Istanbul is the cultural and financial centre of Turkey. Located on the Bosphorus Strait and straddling both Asia and Europe, Istanbul is the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents. Istanbul was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.

Visiting international students may apply for housing at the BU residence Hall, the Superdorm. The residence hall is located a short walk from the BU campus. Students interested in living in the Superdorm should visit Superdorm homepage for more information; availability in the Superdorm is limited as rooms are assigned on a rolling basis, so interested students are encouraged to apply early.

PLEASE NOTE: Students who wish to apply to this program should be aware of the Department of State Travel Warning for Turkey and must also carefully review the University Policy for Student Travel and submit a petition per the policy's instructions.

Students interested in studying at Bogaziçi University for a Spring term or Academic Year should complete the online UVA application by clicking the "Apply Now" button at the top of this website, and must also apply to Bogaziçi University as exchange students. Because the Fall term at Bogaziçi ends in January, students are not advised to study there for only a Fall term. Consult the Academic Calendar for reference. For more information about the exchange program at Bogaziçi, please visit the Incoming Student page. For more information on the University please visit the Bogaziçi homepage.

Students will pay their regular tuition rate and fees to UVA for the term they are on a UVA Exchange Program.

Students are additionally responsible for room and board, transportation, and personal expenses. Students will pay the host institution or make their own arrangements for accommodations. Check the host institution web site for accommodation choices, cost, and application procedures.

Students are responsible for booking and paying for their own international airfare as well as researching and obtaining the necessary visa.

UVA students are required to purchase CISI health and emergency insurance.
