Program Description:

School of Humanities
and Social Science

Since its official opening in October 1991, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has established itself as an intellectual powerhouse, energizing the community's transformation into a knowledge-based society, and securing a place on the academic world map in record-breaking time. An innovator in research and teaching, HKUST is the only science and technology research university in Hong Kong, and the only one to offer an all-PhD faculty. Its groundbreaking work in science, engineering, business, humanities and social science is successfully pushing back the boundaries of the information age. Such advances are assisted by the University's top-class facilities.

The School of Humanities and Social Science prepares front-runners of tomorrow in business, government, education and engineering, and trains humanists and social scientists to work inside and outside academia. The School provides our students with skills in social and cultural analysis and communications. The School's interdisciplinary China focus, in a free academic environment, has created research and educational outcomes unique in Greater China and the world. The School's wide range of faculty expertise and boundary-free curriculum enables students to acquire broad-based knowledge derived from diverse human civilizations; globally-derived skills of research, writing, and critique; and an awareness of civic duty and social responsibility. Our faculty members' high quality research on China adds depth, as well as analytical and methodological rigor to students' understanding of the world they live in. Through unrestricted discussion of issues of intellectual and social significance, our students come to think independently, guard against the pitfall of binary views and arrive at solutions to problems of society and culture.

Students will be accommodated on-campus as best as possible. Application forms will be enclosed in the admission package and should be submitted directly to the Student Housing Office by the designated deadline. For more information on on- and off-campus accommodations, please visit the Student Housing Office website.

HKUST Humanities/Social Science Info Sheet 2017-18

Students enrolled in the School of Humanities and Social Science can take courses in the following departments:

All HKUST's approved courses can be found in the Academic Calendar. The language of instruction is English, except for some humanities and social science courses.

Not all courses are offered every semester, therefore a list of past course offerings has been prepared to provide insight as to which semester (fall or spring) a course is usually offered.

Students may potentially enroll in classes offered in other Schools but only with the permission of the instructor and subject to the availability of seats.

After the student has been nominated for exchange, he/she needs to select courses from the HKUST website and list those courses on the HKUST application. Course registration is done online in late July or early August for Fall semester and in early January for Spring semester. Students will be assigned with a random number that determines the registration time slots. At an approriate time, students will be informed by email to look up the registration time and random number, the class schedule, the course description, and other necessary information on the "Course Registration" section of the  Admissions, Registration, and Records Office.
