UVA in Valencia: Sports, Language, & Culture
This program offers HIEU 3712-Spanish Culture & Civilization, which is taught in English. This course offers a comprehensive view of Spain, incorporating the history and cultural importance of sports. Students can take either HIEU 3712 and one Spanish course, or two Spanish courses.
This program is designed to give student-athletes and those interested in sport the opportunity to experience study abroad without sacrificing their training commitments. Participants will be able to engage in a strength and conditioning plan provided by a coach. Training sessions will take place at a maximum of three days per week. In addition, all students will be required to document their experience through photography, videography, blogging and journaling.
Valencia is the third largest city in Spain, with a population of around 800,000. Located on the Mediterranean Coast and surrounded by immense beaches, it gracefully mixes old and new, with modern public services, business establishments and leisure attractions, set against a backdrop of historically important civic and religious buildings, monuments and museums.
Valencia is well located with respect to other interesting cities in Spain as well as continental Europe. With its own airport, much of Europe is accessible.
Spanish Culture & Civilization (HIEU 3712) and one Spanish language course

Summer Course choices
UVA student-athletes must meet with the UVA Athletics Academic Affairs office prior to completing the application.

- Completed SPAN 1060 (B– or higher) or SPAN 2020 (SPAN 2020 is not offered in this program)
Accommodation and Meals
UVA in Valencia premises are located in the University District of Valencia and offer spacious well-equipped classrooms, a computer room, and a lounge. The program has a full support staff.
Students are housed in homestays with full board, hosted by families with a long-standing relationship with the program. Students will be provided three meals a day and their laundry will be done once a week.
Workshops, concerts, theater, movies, museums, music, sports, daytrips, weekend trips, and more. Live Spain and its language to the fullest!
Cost and Financial Aid

Passport and Visa
All participants will need a valid passport in order to participate in the program. Students must ensure that their passport is valid at least six months past the program return date. US passport holders will not need a visa to participate in this program. International students should meet with their International Student Advisor and Education Abroad Advisor in the International Studies Office as part of the application process.
