Program Description:

Sally and Bruce Nelson Travel Grants
Thanks to the generosity of the Nelson family, the Asia Institute is able to support students pursing language and cultural study in Southeast Asia. Preference shall be given to applicants who have not recently been to Southeast Asia. Scholarship award amounts vary and depend upon the qualifications of the applicant pool. Students may receive up to the cost of round-trip airfare.

Eligibility

  • Be a currently enrolled UVA undergraduate or graduate student
  • Participate in either a credit-bearing language study program or thesis/dissertation-related research fieldwork in Southeast Asia for a minimum of 2 weeks
  • Be approved to participate. Submit either 
  • Maintain good academic and disciplinary standing

Expectations

  • Share your experience with the UVA community through writing, photography, or video
  • Share your experience through lectures, colloquia, seminars, etc. at events coordinated by the East Asia Center

To Apply

  • Complete the Education Abroad Scholarship Application
  • Applicants for thesis/dissertation-related research must also submit a letter of recommendation from the thesis/dissertation supervisor directly to the East Asia Center by the application deadline.
